The Gambia, Banjul : OHCHR WARO Regional Representative, Mr Robert Kotchani, participates in the Annual Regional Consultation of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa and meets partners to promote the #HumanRights75 Campaign.

From 6-10 June, the Regional Representative of OHCHR in West Africa visited the Gambia to participate in the Annual Regional Consultation of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa organized by the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa in with the ECOWAS Commission, OHCHR and UNOWAS.

Prior to the consultation, the Regional Representative met the Chairperson of the Gambia National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Commissioner Emmanuel Joof to discuss ongoing collaboration and partnership. The conversation focused on the NHRC’s request for technical support and capacity building including on promotion and protection of the rights of key populations.

The Regional Representative also met the Chairperson and members of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters, Honourable Madi Ceesay to discuss partnership and training opportunities. The parliamentarians welcomed the OHCHR’s expression of supportand requested capacity building in various human rights areas.

With a view to raising awareness of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Regional representative met with around 70 student members of the #Kotu Senior Secondary School #HumanRights club, #Banjul and had a rich conversation related to the right to education, child protection and human dignity.

At the end of the day, the Regional Representative was the special guest on GRTS news to discuss the agenda of his mission and the support provided by the @UNHumanRights to the governmentsof the region and #TheGambia on #HumanRights issues and #HumanRights75 UDHR celebrations

During the opening ceremony of the Regional Consultation of National Human Rights Institutions in #WestAfrica organized by the Regional Network of NRHIs, and co-hosted by the NHRC of The Gambia with the collaboration of the Ecowas Commission, UNOWAS ; the Regional Representative presented the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Honourable Dawda A. Jallow and Commissioner Emmanuel D. Joof, Chairperson of the Gambia National Human Rights Commission #NHRCGambia #HumanRights Defender pin badges , to salute the Gambia’s important human rights achievements under its transitional justice and wider governance reform agenda.

From 7-9 June, during the fifth Regional #NHRI meeting in West Africa, Commissioners’ plea was for greater autonomy of action and funding for "NHRIs, in order to meet the challenges of #HumanRights in #Africa 75 years after the adoption of the UDHR.”

Before leaving Banjul, the Regional Representative Robert Kotchani met with Seraphine Wakana UN Gambia Resident Coordinator accompanied by the Senior Human Rights Advisor to discuss issues of common interest relating to #HumanRights in the context of the 75th anniversary of the #UDHR, ongoing capacity-building of national partners by OHCHR with partnership and collaboration with the UNCT.

Mr Kotchani met also with UN Gambia sister agencies UNDP, UNAIDS, UNICEF and UNFPA to draw up a joint roadmap in order to support national partners trainings of the National Human Rights Commission, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters and #CSOs. Discussions also considered how agencies could reflect UDHR #HumanRights75 celebrations into their scheduled activities.
