Fighting Discrimination
Fighting discrimination

Fighting inequalities and discrimination; in particular racial discrimination and those based on gender, religion, and toward other marginalized groups.

Discrimination based on race, ethnic origin, religion, gender and sexual orientation is a common concern in all countries of the sub-region. Women do not enjoy the same rights and opportunities as men. They may also be victims of violence. People with disabilities face social exclusion and significant discrimination. Numerous difficulties hinder their economic and social participation. A large majority of migrants; in particular, irregular migrants without papers, face racism, xenophobia and other chronic forms of discrimination. Recurrent crises in the sub-region have also increased the number of migrants living in difficult economic situations. In numerous countries of the sub-region, homosexuality is criminalized. LGBT people (lesbians, gays, bi-sexual and transgender) are strongly discriminated against and often stigmatized, in particular in the media. Social discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender remains a problem.

objectives

National legislation is in accordance with regional and international standards against discrimination and for equality in the five (5) countries targeted (Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Senegal, and Benin).

Judicial procedures are simplified in order to improve access to justice in Senegal for discriminated groups (in particular, migrants, people with disabilities, women and LGBT people).
